Yellowjackets

YELLOWJACKET REMOVAL PITTSBURGH

This insect is fairly easy to recognize by the distinct yellow and black stripe-like pattern (may be confused on occasion with one of the skinnier paper wasps found in several states including Pennsylvania.) Mature Yellowjacket nests (colonies can contain 1000-2000 adults) and are commonly found in residential areas. Yellowjackets may often be referred to as ground bees.

Yellowjackets attack rapidly and aggressively

The yellowjacket is notorious for disturbing many cook-outs, gardening chores, and other outside activities because of their aggressiveness. Depending on the species, yellowjackets can vary in size from 1/3″ to 3/4″ in size and nest in a variety of locations. yellowjacket nests above ground are constructed as to visible paper-like cone of ball shaped structures in shrubs, trees, on the exterior of buildings, beneath decks, bridges, eaves of rooflines. Many times these nests are not noticeable until shrubs or trees are being trimmed. Removal of these colonies is best left to the professional exterminators at Bee Control.

There can be no doubt that yellowjacket colonies underground, in vegetation or on the exterior of buildings can cause a great deal of anxiety to people and animals. However, many would agree that the third and very common scenario can prove to be the most upsetting for property owners and demands even greater emergency extermination response from Bee Control.

Under these circumstances, yellowjackets frequently establish nests in walls, ceilings, and attic cavities, where the nest is rarely visible. Evidence of their presence is usually indicated by constant traffic flying in and out of a small gap, crack, etc. on the outside of the building. Unfortunately, this yellowjacket has a strong tendency to chew through drywall and occasionally plaster, entering a building in substantial numbers without warning. An active colony can very often be heard ‘chewing’, the noise created being a distinctive scratching, crackling, and ticking combination. Subsequently, yellowjackets chew through completely and enter the living or work space.

VERY IMPORTANT: When experiencing an interior nest, avoid at all costs blocking or sealing the outside entry point(s). Also, if you see discoloration on the inside wall or ceiling that may look like a damp spot, resist the temptation to touch it as it is very likely to ‘burst’ and yellowjackets will pour into the building.

SPECIAL NOTE regarding yellowjackets underground. Colonies nesting underground (this species is often referred to as the ground bee) cause many nasty incidents each year due to the fact that the nest is discovered by accident and the yellowjackets attack rapidly and aggressively. They feel threatened when vibrations caused by weed-whackers, lawn mowers, vegetation removal, or even simple movement disrupts them and puts them on the ‘defensive’ by becoming ‘offensive.’

*VERY IMPORTANT: Avoid the extremely dangerous practice of pouring gasoline on the entrance. It is safer by far to contact Bee Control at (412) 765-0335.
